Chapter 5 contrasts transactions that perform I/O with those that only operate on storage. However, operations on a persistent storage device such as a disk drive are generally considered I/O. Therefore, this dichotomy is faulty. Some rewording ought to be found that makes it clear that what is at issue is user-visible I/O, such as displaying a web page or dispensing a ticket.
