I'd like to be able to type in several split panes simultaneously, like e.g. gnome terminator or ClusterSSH do.

Well, I can't because I couldn't figure out how that would be done. I've searched the documentation which didn't help either.

Would you please shed some light on how this is done?

I found the option mentioned, however it is lacking compared to gnome terminator's implementation. In that program, you can manually create groups of specific panes and input only into that specific group of panes no matter how many are visible. https://gnometerminator.blogspot.com/p/introduction.html

gh-1008: Add hotkey `Apps+Alt+G` to group input for selected panes.
So one may add or remove console to input group by activating it
and pressing the `Apps+Alt+G` (configurable). Consoles may belong
  to different splits/tabs.
