SSL Peer Certificate Error while checking for updates after installation

I have installed Miktex using apt on Ubuntu 20.04 following instructions given here.
miktexsetup finish runs successfully. After opening the Miktex Console and clicking on upgrade, the following error occurs:

It would be great if someone could guide me on how to solve this. This recent comment also has the same problem, but the issue was locked and limited to collaborators.

Thank you. Simply said, your system setup is not compatible with MiKTeX. This cannot be fixed on the MiKTeX side. Please ask your system administrator how to solve the problem. If this is not possible, I would recommend that you install another distribution.
