currently there is no public RML utilities available for SQL Server 2016 and newer (I can use SQLNexus only for SQL Server version 2014 or older). Can you public a new version of them where we can use also profiler/xperf traces for SQL Server 2016 or later?

Octavian, we have a preview build that can process 2016 and 2017 versions. If you want to try it out, please send me an email : suresh_dot_kandoth_at_microsoft_dot_com
We have plans to update the public downloads with the latest versions.

Is there any update on when RML that supports 2016/2017 will be available publicly?

Why are we still waiting for a version of ReadTrace that can process Sql Server 2016?

To get a version of ReadTrace that can process SQL Server 2016 and 2017 trace files or XEL files, follow these steps:

  1. Download the Database Experimentation Assistant (DEA) from
  2. Install the DEA toolset. Default path used is "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Corporation\Database Experimentation Assistant"
  3. If you look in the folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Corporation\Database Experimentation Assistant\Dependencies\X64" you will notice the latest versions of ReadTrace.
  4. Make a backup copy of your existing ReadTrace and other related files from C:\Program Files\Microsoft Corporation\RMLUtils
  5. Copy the 4 files from "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Corporation\Database Experimentation Assistant\Dependencies\X64" to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Corporation\RMLUtils" and overwrite the existing files.
  6. Now you should able to process the trace files of SQL Server 2016 and 2017 using the newer version of ReadTrace.

The team that owns the ReadTrace utilities has an action item to update/refresh the download bits for RML with these new binaries. There is no estimated date on when this will be made available.
