Archived project. This repository is a historical snapshot, preserved for archival and curiosity. It is not maintained, and no support, fixes or pull requests should be expected. The last change dates from November 2013.
Wintermute Engine (WME) is a runtime and a set of editing tools for creating and running point-and-click adventure games on Windows. Development began in 2003. This repository contains the full source of the 1.x line, version 1.10.2 beta.
WME was used to build a substantial number of independent adventure games through the 2000s and early 2010s.
The canonical repository was hosted on Bitbucket at MnemonicWME/wme1 as a
Mercurial repository. Bitbucket dropped Mercurial support in 2020 and free
private/public hosting arrangements changed thereafter, and that repository is
gone.
This Git repository was converted from a surviving local Mercurial clone using
hg-fast-export. The conversion preserves all 14 changesets, their original
authors, dates, messages and merge topology. The tip tree was verified
file-by-file against the Mercurial tip: 5,497 files, byte-identical.
Original Mercurial changeset hashes are preserved as Git notes, so the mapping back to the Bitbucket history remains verifiable:
git log --notes=hgCommit messages were transcoded from cp1252 to UTF-8. Two contributor names
that appeared only as Mercurial usernames were mapped to full names; where no
email address exists anywhere in the history, devnull@localhost is used.

This is 2013-era Windows software and it builds with 2013-era tools. It has not been tested against any modern toolchain. You will need, roughly:
- Visual Studio 2008 (the tree contains
.vcproj/.slnformat 10.00 files; a few components are Visual Studio 2005 era) - MFC, for the editor tools
- The DirectX SDK — the engine targets Direct3D 9, with Direct3D 8 code paths still present
- The .NET Framework, for the C# components under
src/asm - A BCGControlBar license, for
SceneEditandSpriteEdit(see below)
The engine runtime, the script compiler and the console tools do not depend on BCGControlBar.
WME itself is MIT licensed (see license.txt). The bundled dependencies are
not all under the same terms, and are the property of their respective authors:
| Component | Notes |
|---|---|
| zlib, libpng, libjpeg, libogg, libvorbis, libtheora | Permissive open-source licenses; see each subdirectory |
| TreeViewAdv / Aga.Controls | Open-source .NET control library |
| Scintilla / SciTE | Open-source editor component |
Bison / Flex binaries (src/compiler/bin) |
GNU tooling, committed as prebuilt executables |
BCGControlBar (src/external_lib/BCG) |
