Project Lead: @bebatut

Mentor: @paulvill

Welcome to OL6, Cohort A! This issue will be used to track your project and progress during the program. Please use this checklist over the next few weeks as you start Open Leadership Training 🎉.

Before Week 1 (Sept 11): Your first mentorship call

  • Complete the OLF self-assessment (online, printable). If you're a group, each teammate should complete this assessment individually. This is here to help you set your own personal goals during the program. No need to share your results, but be ready to share your thoughts with your mentor.
  • Make sure you know when and how you'll be meeting with your mentor.

Before Week 2 (Sept 18): First Cohort Call (Open by Design)

Before Week 3 (Sept 25): Mentorship call

  • Look up two other projects and comment on their issues with feedback on their vision statement.
  • Complete your Open Canvas (instructions, canvas). Comment on this issue with a link to your canvas.
  • Start your Roadmap. Comment on this issue with your draft Roadmap.

Before Week 4 (Oct 2): Cohort Call (Build for Understanding)

  • Look up two other projects and comment on their issues with feedback on their open canvas.
  • Pick an open license for the work you're doing during the program.
  • Use your canvas to start writing a README, or landing page, for your project. Link to your README in a comment on this issue.

This issue is here to help you keep track of work during the first month of the program. Please refer to the OL6 Syllabus for more detailed weekly notes and assignments past week 4.

I'm working with experienced Galaxy instructors to write tutorial/documentation for pedagogical and technical recommendations to use Galaxy for training and also implement a structure for regular discussion supporting meetings so that Galaxy instructors can have a community to support them gaining the confidence, the technical and teaching skills they need to teach a workshop, or develop new training content

Project Mission & Summary

Galaxy is a popular, web-based workbench that enables users to perform computational analyses of biological data. It is also used to teach bioinformatics, specially via the Galaxy Training Network and its material.

Within the Galaxy Training Network, the Galaxy Training instructors project has the aim to develop a community of Galaxy instructors supporting themselves, developing training recommendations, welcoming and teaching instructors via regular discussion meetings

Milestones

Create document with pedagogical and technical recommendations for trainings using Galaxy

Tasks:

  • Create a group of experienced instructors interested into developing training documentation
  • Organize regular meetings (periodicity) of this group
  • Identification of the different targets for the recommendations
  • Redaction of a document aggregating recommendations for trainings
  • Publication of the document online (as tutorials?)

Implement a structure for regular meetings with experienced and less experienced instructors

  • Create a group of experienced instructors interested into sharing their experiences
  • Identify a set of potentially interested less experienced instructors eager to learn from experienced instructors (mails to workshop organizers and instructors)
  • Identify the tools for communication (online meetings, note sharing)
  • Identify the periodicity for such meetings
  • Advertise the meetings on the Hub, training website, mailing list, Gitter

Develop the feeling to belong to a Galaxy instructor community

Tasks:

  • Implement communication channels for the Galaxy instructors (Gitter?)
  • Organize regular online meetings for the whole community
  • Have a BoF during next GCC

@bebatut As someone unfamiliar to Galaxy, it took me a while to find what Galaxy actually was! If it is important to you to get comments from others, especially those outside of your field, then I would suggest a very small mention of what Galaxy is. I could also have been living under a rock and perhaps Galaxy is a household name!
Now that I know what Galaxy is, and can see the infrastructure around the project, I can see that a project such as yours would be of great benefit to the community! Is there a community discourse or similar? If not, discourse has a free tier for open source projects or you can set it up yourselves.
Looking forward to seeing this develop!

Thanks @fraguada for the feedback. I added a general introduction to Galaxy in the "Project Mission & Summary"
The Galaxy community uses currently several Gitter channels to communicate: a general one, one dedicated to training, one for tool development, etc.
