Project Lead: @BaliMaha @catherinecronin @miazamoraphd

Mentor: @quirksahern

Welcome to OL6, Cohort A! This issue will be used to track your project and progress during the program. Please use this checklist over the next few weeks as you start Open Leadership Training 🎉.

Before Week 1 (Sept 11): Your first mentorship call

  • Complete the OLF self-assessment (online, printable). If you're a group, each teammate should complete this assessment individually. This is here to help you set your own personal goals during the program. No need to share your results, but be ready to share your thoughts with your mentor.
  • Make sure you know when and how you'll be meeting with your mentor.

Before Week 2 (Sept 18): First Cohort Call (Open by Design)

Before Week 3 (Sept 25): Mentorship call

  • Look up two other projects and comment on their issues with feedback on their vision statement.
  • Complete your Open Canvas (instructions, canvas). Comment on this issue with a link to your canvas.
  • Start your Roadmap. Comment on this issue with your draft Roadmap.

Before Week 4 (Oct 2): Cohort Call (Build for Understanding)

  • Look up two other projects and comment on their issues with feedback on their open canvas.
  • Pick an open license for the work you're doing during the program.
  • Use your canvas to start writing a README, or landing page, for your project. Link to your README in a comment on this issue.

This issue is here to help you keep track of work during the first month of the program. Please refer to the OL6 Syllabus for more detailed weekly notes and assignments past week 4.

Draft of our Mission & Vision:

Mission
To build equity-focused, open, connected intercultural learning experiences - making use of the open web in ways intercultural learning experiences do not often do, and maintaining an equity focus so that the intercultural learning experiences do not become exploitative and power imbalanced.

Vision
-To provide a model for equity-focused open intercultural learning that can be replicated, expanded and improved upon, while involving educators and students from all over the world
-To use our experience in the first iteration to improve on further iterations and contribute to research and literature on potential good practices to use for similar purposes
-To engage in and model continual learning and emergent curriculum development as Equity Unbound progresses, through open engagement with all participants.
-To grow a global network of digital citizens committed to connected learning and intercultural digital literacies on the open web

For me, your mission would be stronger if some parts were rephrased to be more positive. For example, instead of "making use of the open web in ways intercultural learning experiences do not often do," maybe "bringing new open web practices to intercultural learning experiences." It might be even better to name specific practices, but without knowledge of your area, I'm not sure if that's feasible.

Also, after reading these, I still don't have a good idea of what you're building. Can you include concrete examples of what you mean by intercultural learning experiences? or am I just too far from your intended audience and that is a well defined term within the appropriate audience?

@brownsarahm Hi Sarah - thanks for giving us feedback on our Mission & Vision. This will give us a chance to review our statements and make improvements. I'm particularly struck by your 2nd comment:

Maha, Mia and I are all connected, open educators, and no doubt use language in ways that are understood in that world - but we could make our intentions clearer for the benefit of people with different areas of expertise. Very valuable feedback, thanks.

Here is an initial take on the "README" file requested. It is a snapshot of what is on our current Equity Unbound HOMEPAGE (http://unboundeq.creativitycourse.org):

Equity Unbound is an emergent, collaborative curriculum which aims to create equity-focused, open, connected, intercultural learning experiences across classes, countries and contexts. Equity Unbound was initiated by Maha Bali @bali_maha (American University in Cairo, Egypt), Catherine Cronin @catherinecronin (National University of Ireland, Galway), and Mia Zamora @miazamoraphd (Kean University, NJ, USA) for use in their courses this term (September-December 2018), but it is open to all.

Equity Unbound is for learners and/or educators at all levels (e.g. undergraduate, postgraduate, professional development) who are interested in exploring digital literacies with an equity and intercultural learning focus, in an open and connected learning environment. Our motto is:

“The only way to make borders meaningless is to keep insisting on crossing them.” (Lina Mounzer)
Participants will collaborate in a series of open online activities including: collaborative annotation using open-source Hypothes.is, social network conversations and live studio visits, a Wikipedia edit-a-thon, blogging, collaborative multimedia making, and creating their own new learning activities (inspired by the DS106 assignment bank). Activities will seek to develop critical digital literacies and intercultural collaboration while encouraging questions of equity issues such as equity in web representation, digital colonialism, safety and security risks on the web, and how these differ across contexts.

Thanks for the feedback, Sam - we will work on these items. It's also good to have the clarity that preparing for MozFest is our main priority over the coming 2.5 weeks.

Many thanks again,
Catherine
