What will happen in your session?

As half of the world’s native languages are dying, a vast majority of the native language speakers do not get to access information or contribute to the knowledge commons in their own languages. This largely affect the digital inclusion equilibrium. There is an urgent need to digitally-document certain aspects of a language. This session will include demonstration of Open Educational Resources, Open Source software, and Open Datasets that are currently being developed to specifically document endangered/marginalized languages, create open multimedia archives, digital tools like spoken dictionary, text-to-speech and lead to brainstorming on the topics related to digital inclusion using open innovation and web literacy.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

This session will focus on the following outcomes:

  • Detail about what diversity and inclusion gaps currently exist for many marginalized language speakers when it comes to access to knowledge and contribution to the knowledge commons in their native languages; and how they impact on the open knowledge economy
  • Providing a foundation-level knowledge and open toolkits (Open Educational Resources, Open Source software, Open Datasets and methodology) on how to build multimedia libraries
  • Sharing about ways to build digital-accessibility solutions like text-to-speech and speech-to-text from the multimedia-libraries
  • Brainstorming to grow a community to develop aforementioned multilingual resources

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

Projector, microphone-speaker setup and office supplies (paper, pens, post-it notes)

@psubhashish Thank you for your patience! We had an extremely high volume of sessions for the digital inclusion space! We're excited to inform you that your session has been accepted to Mozfest. We hope you're able to join us in London from Oct 27-29. However, we cannot provide a travel stipend. Please let us know if you are able to secure alternative travel funding before the end of September.

Hi @kenyatta1 thanks for sharing the great news. When it is really thrilling for me to hear this news, it is also saddening to share that I would not be able to self-fund my travel. I would really appreciate if we can do it remotely because I am really keen on conducting the session.
