The ActivityPub Network #294
[ UUID ] 63072a00-3b9c-483b-90fe-e0b33bba574c
[ Session Name ] The ActivityPub Network
[ Submitter's Name ] Evan Prodromou
[ Additional facilitators ] Chris Webber,
What will happen in your session?
We'll give an overview of the W3C's ActivityStreams 2.0 social data standard, and its on-the-wire protocol ActivityPub. We'll talk about the state of implementation of ActivityPub in software like Mastodon, pump.io, GNU Mediagoblin and GNU Social.
What is the goal or outcome of your session?
We want to give an indication of the state of decentralized social networks using ActivityStreams.
If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.
It would help to have a projector and WiFi access so we can demo interactions on multiple servers.
As MozFest is approaching we require the following information from your end to better support your session in the Decentralization learning forum space. You can get back to us by replying to this issue or emailing us directly, whichever communication channel is convenient to you.
Thank you! Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any queries.
There's plenty to say about ActivityPub regarding rationale for building a free and decentralized social network; I think those ideas can be communicated to anyone. Of course ActivityPub is an API, but the spec includes a friendly tutorial that can be understood by anyone who knows the most minimum of HTTP and JSON... I've even had some people who didn't skip over the JSON bits and said they go the gist. Nonetheless I'd think that if we spoke in person we'd talk about motivations and say things like "you know how you can send email between users who use Gmail, and Microsoft's Office tools, or even universities or companies or people who host their own... this is like that, but for social networks."
(I don't know what Evan's plan was for the session, so I'm not sure if I could reply to 1-3, but I could give it a try!)
