Fix typos and missing scripture references in Keach's Catechism #37

I have fixed a couple of obvious typos in Keach's Catechism, and added scripture references to Q102 which were not present.

These references were sourced from https://www.desiringgod.org/articles/a-baptist-catechism. It is my understanding that the original catechism published by Benjamin Keach did not contain references, so I cannot find any historic authoritative source for them.

I can't find a really good source on Keach's Catechism. I do think John Piper's edition is an interesting one, but it would probably be a separate entry (and require copy right permission). In the subtitle, it says 'adapted by John Piper' and it isn't clear what parts are adapted.

Here are the three sources I'm checking (again, I can't find a good source):

All 3 of these could be using the same source. They are remarkably similar but I couldn't find info on where they got their stuff.

Yes, I had the same problem in trying to solve this problem! I couldn't find the catechism in EEBO, and in the 19th century printings I found online, there were no scripture references. My Reformed Baptist friends didn't have printed editions either. I'll dig through the Puritan Hard Drive and Semper Reformanda Reformed Baptist USB drive and see if I can find it there.

I thought I would create the PR anyway, as I updated my app with these changes, and my app's copy was created from your JSON data (via a PowerShell script I wrote at https://gist.github.com/pmachapman/0c9d10d754abff6f0fb0abd54131dcb6)

If you find a good source, let me know! The commandments change is a good catch. I'd leave out the Q67 and Q102 changes though to stay with the sources we currently have

I found a very interesting article at https://pettyfrance.wordpress.com/2019/12/04/the-baptist-catechism-commonly-but-falsely-called-keachs/, which linked to a scan the earliest copy at http://access.bl.uk/item/viewer/ark:/81055/vdc_100026931442.0x000001#?#ark:/81055/vdc_100026931451.0x00000a&c=0&m=0&s=0&cv=8&xywh=-240%2C-47%2C3190%2C1875

It looks like it wasn't written by Keach at all - his actual catechism can be found at https://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=evans;idno=N29515.0001.001, which is completely different.

Also, it looks like there are no verse references for the infant baptism question, and the question numbers have changed over time (i.e. "Q2. What is the chief end of man?" is not present in the original).

I need to evaluate whether I will rewrite it completely in my app to conform to the first edition - I think people may not appreciate my copy being radically different from the copies they are used to seeing online.

Omission is clearly a typo in Q67 (compared to the original and https://archive.org/details/MN40248ucmf_4/page/n19/mode/2up), but I will remove the references in Q102.

Sweet find! What an awesome source. Also an excellent article (I've skimmed it and I'm looking forward to reading through it later). PR approved! 🎉

For this repo, I'm going to:

  • Keep Keach's Catechism (this file) as the modern/common version (someday find out where this modern version came from)
  • Add a 1695 edition for this document. I'm not 100% sure what to call it, but 'A Brief Instruction in the Principles of Christian Religion' will be one of the alternate titles

It is an open question (#11), how we're going to handle multiple near identical versions of a document. I've added these two catechisms to #11 so we can address them in the future.
