An important key to the success of the ODK project is linked to its ability to foster a community in the spirit of the open source projects it is built on. Part of this relies on the organization and participation to scientific and development events of many different scales and objectives. Following up on D2.2 (#42) for year 1, and D2.11 #36 for year 2 and 3, we report here on more than 29 events we have been part of during year 4. This includes:

  • the (co)organization of seven development workshops;
  • the (co)organization of ten training and community building workshops -- including one in a developing country and one targeted at women;
  • the organization of one research conference;
  • communications at and participation to eleven external events.

We describe each event with its specific goals and explain the exact implication of ODK in the organization and realization of the event. We give a general overview of the impact of single events, thus drawing a picture of ODK impact as a whole.

Do we need to describe GAP Tutorial at PGTC 2019 in Birmingham https://www.codima.ac.uk/pgtc2019/ as a dissemination venue coming from the synergy between ODK and CoDiMa in the UK? The tutorial was funded by CoDiMa, and on day 2 I used Binder to run https://github.com/alex-konovalov/gap-teaching to teach how to use GAP with Jupyter.

Also, I will add the fie for the GAP Tutorial at GAP in Algebraic Research school (Aachen, November 2018) by Alexander Konovalov and Sergio Siccha https://lbfm-rwth.github.io/gap-in-algebraic-research-2018/

Several of these remain assigned to @nthiery , but if there was anyone else involved in organizing or who attended some of those workshops who could help pick up the slack that would be good. You can follow the existing event template, and at most add just a couple sentences for each workshop if nothing else.

For convenience, I pushed the current pdf, available from the Report link above.

@nthiery pushed GAP training in Aachen! Not sure about Birmingham event, so will leave it for now.

Added section for GAP Singular Meeting and School August 2019. Filled in what I could, but I was only there for the first bit. Perhaps @sebasguts or others will need to fill in the blanks!

@nthiery I attended two GAP Days meetings: Fall 2018 in Siegen and Sprint 2019 in Halle. Neither was an ODK event, but I did GAP development work related to ODK there, and travelled with ODK funding. Should they be mentioned here? If so, in what section?

(and sorry for the spam!)

@nthiery Is the software demo I gave at FPSAC the math conference too small to report on (it was a preview of what we had at the math data workshop, and ODK covered my expenses)

@katjabercic: Thanks for bringing this up. I have been meaning to add an entry about the software demo at FPSAC. With my chairing and your demo as contribution from ODK + the use of Sage/binder in many demos.

Would you feel like writing a first draft of that entry in "Communication and participation in external events"?

I wrote everything I could think of. Let me know if there's anything else I should do.

I believe this is close from completion. If anyone would have a chance to do some final proofreading and details checking ...

@IzabelaFaguet : the collected numbers of workshops in the issue description is currently about all four years, right? For this report we should give the numbers just for RP3. And keep the cumulated numbers for the technical report and KPI's!

Done. I will add the cumulated numbers to the KPI section but need to look again at the numbers for years 2 and 3.

Ok, finally submitted on Oct. 9. Done!

A late delivery, but some quite impressive content. Thanks everyone for being so active on community building, dissemination and training!
