In trying to find sponsors for food, I'm getting questions about whether we're a non-profit or not, and whether they can write off these "donations".

Is OpenHack a 501(c)(3) entity? Is there any desire for it to become one?

It is not any kind of legal entity right now. If we can scrounge up at least $250 for the fees (and a bank account) I can see about registering OpenHack as a 501 in NYS. Beyond that the tax-exempt stuff is more complicated...I have a lawyer who can help us though.

Honestly I would rather wait as long as possible to do this...like if we ever organize a conference or something.

I have a lawyer friend who can help too.

Is this still an issue?

Close it. I'm not getting pushback anymore.
