With the advent of registered accounts in OpenRA, it would be cool to have a friends list where you could see which mod/game your friend is currently in. It would be cool to be able to join a lobby your friend is in via the friends list. It would also be cool to directly send them a message within the client, and maybe even start a party chat with a group of 3 or more friends.

I realize we have great external applications such as Discord these days to do some of these functions but it would be a lot easier to make new friends in game and add them to your friends list without having to coordinate via external applications.

This would be a great feature to motivate people to link their accounts. Rather than taking things away from people who don't register, it's nice to incentivize people with features that wouldn't otherwise be possible without an account. Would also (hopefully) encourage positive friendly interaction. Does anyone see a feasible way to implement this?

The forum has a built in friends list feature. In principle we could have the game client piggyback on this to show what they are doing, but there are a number of issues that would need to be resolved (e.g. how to prevent trolls from abusing this to track someone who they want to target) and a proper specification outlined.

This would also require changes to the privacy policy, as it would mean explicitly tracking what servers each player is connecting to, and sharing it with others.
