Currently, the only option to mass rearm air units in RA is to press deploy hotkey, and actors select the closest pad/field to land on. In situations where you have pads/fields spread across the map, units may (and usually will) choose a landing site you do not want. At the same time, if you explicitly right-click the landing destination, only one unit will land there while others will either idle above it or just go idle somewhere else.

An option is proposed to use a mechanic similar to load-alternate-transport, where if you alt+click the landing site, air units will try to spread across nearby landing sites automatically.

At the same time, if you explicitly right-click the landing destination, only one unit will land there while others will either idle above it or just go idle somewhere else.

If this is the case then this should be fixed so that you are able to assign a pad/field to rearm for multiple selected aircraft. The other points are IMO nothing the engine has to solve for the player (mitigate bad building placement). Not a fan of another hidden modifier.

I just checked this in game. Aircraft already do this in bleed. If you order a group of aircraft to an airfield, they will disperse to adjacent airfields. You don't even need to press ALT. If there are more aircraft than airfields they will wait until one is reloaded and then switch places.

If you order a group of aircraft to an airfield, they will disperse to adjacent airfields.

My understanding was that the desired behavior in this case is that all aircraft only use the selected airfield, whereas pressing F for RTB will make them land at any available airfield. To set an explicit rearm location might be useful if you are in a situation when you don't want your aircraft to fly across the map to an airfield in a dangerous location.

Perhaps I misunderstood the issue. I'm also not sure if it would be a good idea to introduce this behavior (how I understood it), because it might confuse players that used to click on a rearm location instead of using the RTB hotkey to make their aircraft rearm at all available locations.

OK, I checked it again. It is not just adjacent airfields. Aircraft even do this when the airfields are on opposite ends of the map. It's effectively the same as the RTB hotkey. That definitively does not seem like desired behavior to me.

OK, seems that this behaviour is not easily reproducible, and most of the times aircraft actually behaves like it should do.

This is the behaviour for 20181215:

  1. If you left-click the airfield when the number of aircrafts is less/equal than available airfields - they all land to adjacent airfields as expected.
1a. If there are armed aircrafts on the nearby airfields, selected ones will subplant them (and already landed aircrafts leave to rally point) even when spaces are otherwise available.
  2. If you click the airfield where an aircraft is rearming, nothing will happen even if nearby airfield is available.
  3. Cursor sometimes switches to "not able to enter" even when airfield is available. Looks like it is "blocked" by the aircraft that actually landed on another airfield (selected all units to show order lines):

Now, behaviour in 20190127 pre-playtest build:

  1. Behaves mostly the same like above, only sometimes some of the aircrafts do not land at all and are left idling besides the airfield.
  2. Something like this also happens for unarmed aircrafts as well:

Also I've managed to do this (first, longbows didn't want to land for rearming at all until I've pressed "stop"):
