It would be nice to have an auto-updater for Windows (like Chrome): updater should automatically handle updated releases with option to select if testing versions (nightly, beta) should be installed, or just stable ones.

Yes, it could be useful, at least showing information about new releases.
It could be done in two steps, first one, implement checking for new versions (available for all platforms), second one, actual updating tool (available where possible, maybe also for Linux if it is not installed from packages - compile time flag could be enough).

Should version be read from github? Something like http://developer.github.com/v3/repos/releases/

@mispp, maybe, too early to decide. ;-)

FYI: There were a lot of angry comments in the Opera Desktop Blog when they added something similar to the new Opera so make sure you have options to control how it works :)

Well, for me the new update feature of new Opera is nice. I mean, it's nice it ignore the UAC settings (new Opera will update, no matter of current UAC settings), but it's not fine when these updates are "must have" and can't disable it (because of, for example, slow network), you know :P

@opticyclic, updates behind the scenes are extremely annoying, if we would support them at all then for sure they would be disabled by default.
By default we would simply inform about new release and offer to install it, as it used to be in classic Opera.
We could also ask user once which mode is preferred:

  • do not inform;
  • inform (default);
  • update behind the scenes.
