OxShef: Promoting Interactive Data Visualisation for Communicating Research Outputs

OxShef is a joint collaboration between the Interactive Data Network of University of Oxford and Research Software Engineering at University of Sheffield. The goal of OxShef is as follows:

Promote, support and teach researchers about how interactive data visualisation can aid in increasing the impact and engagement with research outputs

We have a network of websites hosted on Github Pages to help achieve this goal, all OxShef content is written to be as generally useful as possible. However, some services discussed on our websites are only available to researchers at University of Oxford or/and University of Sheffield.

What visualisation should I use?

OxShef: Charts provides an overview of common data visualisation charts, maps, graphs and more. Use this website to help pick which visualisations best suit your data and for advice on avoiding common pitfalls or complications in data visualisation

What visualisation tool can I use?

OxShef has dedicated sites for the following visualisation tools

Visualisation Tool Type of Tool Brief Description
Python Scripting language You can build interactive data visualisations fairly easily using Python on your local machine, but hosting these online typically requires researchers to invest a few hours in learning about server configuration to use the tools mentioned below.
R Scripting language You can easily build interactive data visualisations using R on your local machine and there are several ways these can be published online for free, provided they're made public but there are limits on what you can do for free.
