for example sending null as the value for a parameter to indicate that a value has not been set but the parameter still has some significance.
Empty, non-required parameters are passed by the client as null. This will lets the server determine which parameters need to be used and which must be dropped right away.

parameters like &ref=&anotherParam=val (those which are part of the URL are still removed). URL params with blank value are removed from the URL. URL params can be surrounded with  in which case if the param has blank value everything between the  is removed.
and also add the 'g' modifier so the RegExp will replace multiple occurrences of the placeholder. Do not remove blank parameters ("") as they are still processed and can be considered by the server-side.

Simplified dependencies by using built-in modules. The package.json will be updated shortly based on the pull request from nathanwdavis made the other day.
