From @jimav

This is a bug report for perl from jim.avera@gmail.com,
generated with the help of perlbug 1.40 running under perl 5.20.2.

Hello,

The as_float() method on Math::BigRat objects seems to return wrong
values if "use bigrat" appears anywhere in the program, even an
unrelated scope. It is as if as_float() simply discards the denominator
of the BigRat and returns a BigFloat value equivalent to only the numerator.

I'm guessing there is a conversion-code bug in some case which is only
executed as a side-effect of the "use bigrat" pragma having been executed.

In any case, it doesn't seem right that "use bigrat" has global
effects which have nothing to do entering or existing the containing scope.

my $x = Math::BigRat->new("314/100");
my $xf = $x->as_float(); # expecting 3.14
print "\nBUG (x=$x xf=$xf)\n\n" # but got 157
  unless abs($xf - 3.14) < .01;

print "x = ", Dumper($x), "\n";
print "xf = ", Dumper($xf),"\n";

exit 0;

The Math::BigRat man page says as_float() takes an optional accuracy argument with
a "default of 40 digits", but the man page has a contrary example which implies
the default accuracy is 1:

"as_float()
  $x = Math::BigRat->new('13/7');
  print $x->as_float(),"\n"; # '1' <--- I don't understand this

  $x = Math::BigRat->new('2/3');
  print $x->as_float(5),"\n"; # '0.66667'

  Returns a copy of the object as BigFloat, preserving the accuracy as
  wanted, or the default of 40 digits.
"

Even if an accuracy is given explicitly, it seems to be ignored if "use bigrat" is ever compiled.

Probably related: The following loops with infinite recursion:

$ perl -wE 'use Math::BigRat; $x=Math::BigRat->new("2/3"); $y=$x->as_float(5); say $y-$x; use bigrat'

(but works fine if the trailing 'use bigrat' is removed)

I'm guessing there is a conversion-code bug in some case which is only
executed as a side-effect of the "use bigrat" pragma having been
executed.

In any case, it doesn't seem right that "use bigrat" has global
effects which have nothing to do entering or existing the containing
scope.

bignum and Math::Big* are now maintained on CPAN, not as part of the perl core.

That said, this appears to be caused by:

  Math::BigFloat->import(upgrade => 'Math::BigRat', ':constant');

in bigrat::import(), if that's commented out the expected value is returned.
