eval/die not working in Perl 5.5.3 for BeOS #2115

OS: BeOS 5.01 Pro
Version: 5.5.3 (aka 5.005_03) - latest version for BeOS
Problem: eval/die does not appear to be working properly
Test case:

$a = 0;
$b = 5;
eval{
print "Result is: " . $b/$a;
};
if($@){
print "Oops! Can't divide by zero";
}

$@ is not being evaluated as true. Tried similar case with 'die' instead.
Same problem.
