Migrated from rt.perl.org#1339 (status was 'resolved')

Searchable as RT1339$

Because I've lately been good at starting vigorous debates
one more won't hurt that much any more :-)

I'd like to open the discussion whether there is stuff in CPAN that is
useful enough to move to the standard distribution for Perl 5.6.

This is of course an open challenge for everybody to start preaching
for their favorite piece of software, against everybody else's, and/or
start arguing whether we should be adding any more bloat to the
distribution, isn't it big enough as it stands, shouldn't we rather
revive the Perl SDK project, et cetera. The herald has opened the
games, the arena is yours.

Just for the heck of it I propose

  Unicode::Map8 (this was already agreed at the TPC3 p5p moot)
  Time::HiRes

definitely,

  XML::Parser (what's the relation of this and libxml-perl?)
  LWP (+ required HTML::XXX)

very probably (I don't do much *ML myself but many people seem to do),
and it may be that at least the getrlimit,setrlimit parts of my own
personal hobby horse (though I've neglected that for ages now...)
BSD::Resource may be useful with the large file support
(setrlimit(RLIMIT_FSIZE, RLIMIT_INFINITY)).

Unicode::Map8    \(this was already agreed at the TPC3 p5p moot\)
Time::HiRes

Time::HiRes has some VMS issues, FWIW. (Not that I *object*, mind. Just a
datapoint)

definitely,

XML::Parser \(what's the relation of this and libxml\-perl?\)
LWP \(\+ required HTML::XXX\)

Might as well add in libnet too, though that might make the inital
configuration a bit trickier.

I'd also propose one of the Taint modules from CPAN, either mine or Tom
Phoenix's. (For the core I'd prefer mine, as it's XS, but Tom's is pure
perl and installable places that don't have a C compiler handy)

Time::HiRes probably doesn't work in a lot of places (including Mac OS) yet.

Well, I'd personally like to see LWP and DB_File in the core.

Hmmm, I'd forgotten about some of the other ports. I expect this info's
available on all the platforms--it's just a matter of digging it out.

It probably ought to go in anyway--it's not like those of us on non-Unix
platforms have anything better to do with our time... :-)
