From gmhard@netcom.com

#if defined(_LP64)
#define DATAMODEL_NATIVE DATAMODEL_LP64
#elif defined(_ILP32)
#define DATAMODEL_NATIVE DATAMODEL_ILP32
#else
#error "No DATAMODEL_NATIVE specified"
#endif /* _LP64 || _ILP32 */

  I always get the error (No DATAMODEL_NATIVE specified), no
matter what I do. Attempts to define it in the makefile cause
other, even uglier errors.

  FWIW, I'm using gcc 2.7.2.1 and -I/usr/local/include, which
is where the gcc includes live. I ran Configure interactively, I
answered all the questions, and I took all the defaults (except
for my email address). I'm a seasoned Unix builder who knows his
way around compilers and makefiles. Each of the questions from
Configure made perfect sense to me, and the default selections
seemed eminently reasonable.

  Any ideas?
