From scinfo@reading.ac.uk

pod/perlfaq5.html#How_can_I_read_in_a_file_by_para says:

<quote>
How can I read in a file by paragraphs?

Use the $\ variable (see the perlvar manpage for details). You can either
set it to "" to eliminate
empty paragraphs ("abc\n\n\n\ndef", for instance, gets treated as two
paragraphs and not
three), or "\n\n" to accept empty paragraphs.
</quote>

Duhhh - $\ is, according to the perlvar manpage (and my
experience) the _output_ record separator, not input!

It's also a bit ambiguous when the page is rendered in html whether the
first string is "" or " " (i.e. without or with a space betwen the quotes.
The text could address this e.g. "set it to "" (note: no space between
the quotes) to eliminate ..... ".
