Step #2: Flashing the toolhead (Plus4)

We will now prepare everything to flash your toolhead MCU.

By following this process you will not need to take the toolhead apart and solder pins to the toolhead daughter-board.
(Qidi calls it "Adapter Plate").

The time has come to take the needed hardware:

Additional hardware required Image
ST-Link V2 programmer USB Breakout Cable
8 pieces male to female jumper wires (20cm) Jumper Wires
A Cable tie Cable tie
  1. Make sure your printer is turned off to avoid causing a short.

  2. Remove the backcover of the toolhead by sliding it up.

  3. Make 4 long wires by stacking two of each jumper cables.

    In my case I connected these to the ST-Link V2 prgrammer:
    Black -> GND (not mandatory but recommended)
    Green -> SWDIO
    White -> SWCLK
    Yello -> RST (not mandatory but recommended)

    Please attach your wires accordingly and double check it.

  4. Locate the serial pins on your toolhead board and carefully bend other cables away if they are in the way: image

  5. Attach the male jumper pins like this:

Pin 5: Yellow -> RST Pin 3: White -> SWCLK Pin 1: Green -> SWDIO
Pin 6: Black -> GND Pin 4: empty Pin 2: empty

  1. Since the cables are currently only loosely connected, take the cable tie and attach them to the side of the toolhead housing with slight tension.
    Make sure that each individual cable is under slight (!) tension.
    This way we have a temporary secure connection to the toolhead daughter board.

Make sure your ST-Link V2 is not connected to the printers USB port before you proceed with the main guide (if the ST-Link is connected, it wont boot).

When the guide asks you to start the printer, wait ~30 seconds for the system to finish booting and then attach the ST-Link V2 to the top USB port.
It should look something like this:

Proceed with the rest of the installation guide.
The wizzard will flash the the katapult bootloader (so you wont need the ST-Link any more in the future) and then the appropiate klipper firmware 😎
This guy is a true magician ✨🧙✨

Note: When finished with the installation, dont forget to:

  • remove the cable tie
  • remove the ST-Link V2 from your toolhead and your printers USB port
