First try with an iOS device after several years of Androids
My iPhone connects to Calibre and puts the device icon on the menu, but pops up the 'Error communicating with device' window. Error details are:

calibre, version 1.39.0
ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device

u'st_size'

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\device.py", line 86, in run
File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\device.py", line 490, in _books
File "C:\Users\colin\AppData\Local\Temp\calibre_nnetuh\uaozpb_ios_local_db\Marvin_overlays.py", line 404, in books
File "C:\Users\colin\AppData\Local\Temp\calibre_nnetuh\uaozpb_ios_local_db\Marvin_overlays.py", line 2114, in _profile_db
KeyError: u'st_size'

The device appears normally in Windows Explorer and iTunes. Everything has been reinstalled, rebooted etc.

I'm running Calibre Portable 1.39 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. iTunes is 11.2.0.115, plugin is 1.4.
Device is iPhone 5s running iOS 7.1.1 with Marvin (Free) 2.7 (just trying it out). Phone is unlocked, currently Vodafone NZ.

Sorry, hadn't checked all the closed issues. Same solution as #87, Plugin 1.4.1 sorted it. Thanks!
