fruit weight and grain weight #242
Comments
fruit weight (TO:0002746)- is the is_a parent to grain weight (TO:0000590), which also is_a yield trait (has dual parentage). Propose we move fruit weight (TO:0002746) to be also is_a fruit yield trait (TO:0000871) (assert dual parentage). Then grain weight (TO:0000590) is in the proper hierarchy and inherits the dual grand-parentage. Original comment by: cooperl09 |
After further consideration, I propose we make fruit weight (TO:0002746) a 'fruit anatomy and morphology trait' (TO:0002629) and also make it is_a 'fruit yield trait' (TO:0000871) (assert dual parentage). I suggest we keep the grain yield trait (O:0000396) as a sub-class fruit yield trait (TO:0000871) for now, as we have annotations on these. But we need to work on revising the definitions. This makes sense. I propose we add some other fruit traits to help in defining, eg those related to grape, peppers/tomato harvest and also fruits that are harvested year round, eg coconut. Will work on that and post for review. Original comment by: mlschaeffer |
Revised def'n based on comments above: fruit weight (TO:0002746): New Comment: Fruit weight is the weight of one or more fruits at a specified level of maturity and, for grain, moisture level. In maize it is often reported as 100 or 1000 kernel weight, in grams and at 15% moisture content. Original comment by: cooperl09 |
Renamed: grain weight TO:0000590: to dehulled grain weight - Original comment by: cooperl09 |
Made new term, sibling to the dehulled grain weight (TO:0000590), child of fruit weight (TO:0002746). kernel weight (new TO:0000919): A fruit weight (TO:0002746) which is associated with the weight of one or more kernels. Added narrow synonyms: 20 kernel weight and kwt (MaizeGDB:78154) Original comment by: cooperl09 |
Moved two terms to be child terms of fruit weight: TO:0002746

fruit weight (TO:0002746) is a component of fruit yield trait (TO:0000871) so I changed the is_a relation to a has_part relation. Original comment by: cooperl09 |
There are a number of related terms that should be grouped better: fruit weight, grain weight and seed weight. Parallel to the PO, there should be fruit or seed weight, dropping grain weight, save as a synonym, per the PO.
Additionally, the numbers of seeds or grains or fruits measured need not be specified as separate traits, eg 1000 kernel weight, but grouped to the main term. The methods of measurement can be spelled out with the numeric values for a given trait. Related traits that may be fruit or seed weight include: dehulled grain, polished grain.
An example definition that would cover maize, but needs some addition to be all inclusive (use PO for guidance). Fruit weight: the weight of one or more fruits [synonyms maize kernel, etc] at a specified level of maturity and, for grain, moisture level. In maize it is often reported as 100 or 1000 kernel weight, in grams and at 15% moisture content. [add other ways often measured for other crops].
