I'm experiencing the same issue for SHA 039edea, the current HEAD of master.

Here's the steps to reproduce for me.

git clone https://github.com/PocketMine/PocketMine-MP.git
cd PocketMine-MP-master/src/build/
./compile.sh
cd ../../
./start.sh

Gives me the following error:

[WARNING] You are not using the standalone PocketMine-MP PHP binary.

 Warning: Unexpected character in input: ' (ASCII=8) state=0 in /home/jonathan/pocketmine/PocketMine-MP- master/src/build/bin/php on line 1723

Warning: Unexpected character in input: '' (ASCII=5) state=0 in /home/jonathan/pocketmine/PocketMine-MP-master/src/build/bin/php on line 1723

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '' (T_STRING) in /home/jonathan/pocketmine/PocketMine-MP-master/src/build/bin/php on line 1723

I experience the same error attempting to run the tests.

I'm using lubuntu 12.04.

After taking the advice of humerusj in #pocketmine IRC, I've copied bin up to the root PocketMine-MP directory.

git clone https://github.com/PocketMine/PocketMine-MP.git mine
cd mine/src/build/
./compile.sh
cp -R bin/ ../../
cd ../../
./start.sh

And now I receive a different error:

jonathan@wallaces-desktop:~/pocketmine/mine$ ./start.sh

After more discussion with and help from humerusj in #pocketmine, the following set of steps worked for me.

git clone https://github.com/PocketMine/PocketMine-MP.git mine
cd mine/src/build/
./compile.sh
cp -R bin/ ../../
cd ../../../
git clone https://github.com/PocketMine/PocketMine-MP.git mine2
cd mine2
mkdir bin
cp ../mine/bin/php bin/
./start.sh

Why I must copy the compiled php binary to a freshly cloned repository makes little sense to me but it is working!
