Welcome to the wiki! We will document the design process of the Audiopoli Protone speakers here. But first the specifications:

  • SB acoustics SB26ADC-C000-4 1" dome tweeter in a Somasonus waveguide
  • SB acoustics SB17MFC35-4 6" woofer
  • ICEpower 50ASX2SE Class D power amplifier
  • Custom active analog crossover

The design process can be split into four parts:

  1. The preliminary prototyping
    • Trying to figure out what elements work together
  2. Digital crossover phase
    • Using a digital crossover (minidsp 2x4) to apply an easily modifiable crossover
    • Based on ground-plane measurements
  3. Anechoic chamber
    • Getting a proper frequency response from the speakers
    • Measurement included horizontal and vertical off-axis responses in far-field, as well as on-axis in near-field.
  4. Design of the analog crossover
    • Based on the anechoic chamber measurements and simulated response.
    • First revision shows that the simulations are accurate. Subjective listening tests also verify the results.
