The currently used pvops0 kernel (2.6.32.9-7.qubes) is based on xen/stable-2.6.32.9 branch and Fedora backported nouveau's patches. This kernel, when run as Dom0 under Xen, doesn't support HW accel for nouveau driver, the default driver for NVidia graphics cards.

The users can still get around the problem, but this requires complicated setup, and also doesn't let the user to use various "desktop effects" in Dom0.

The new xenlinux kernel based OpenSUSE one, that we have now:

https://qubes-os.org/gitweb/?p=joanna/kernel-dom0.git;a=summary

combined with the updated Xen 3.4.3 (Alpha 1 used -rc-3):

https://qubes-os.org/gitweb/?p=joanna/xen.git;a=summary

seems to support the S3 suspend/wakeup quote well.

Still, there are some issues though:

  • On systems with nvidia cards (with nouveau driver), some icons are "damaged" after resume. This is not Xen-, or Qubes- related though -- the same happens on regular F13! Seems to be a problem related to nouveau kernel or X driver.
  • On systems with nvidia cards: sometimes the system (or just X) freezes after resume. I have also experienced this on regular F13, without Xen, so seems to be also a problem related to nouveau driver.
  • Sometimes a VM gets somehow locked up after resume. This seems like an issue with the DomU kernel -- will be investigated in the future.

But, all in all, the S3 support seems quite good know, at least on the few machines we tested it.
