Subject: Qubes OS website suggestion

Hi

I'd like to congratulate you on your clean website design for the
QubesOS project. I'm a big fan of simplicity and clear information
presentation and try to follow those principles in my own sites.

However, I'd also like to notify you of a small error in the site. My
main site is an archive of stories in many different European languages,
so I've had to grapple with the issue of quotemarks in different
languages in some depth. I draw your attention to the last blog page:
https://www.qubes-os.org/news/2016/01/14/qubes-counter/

At two points in that page, words are highlighted in quotemarks.
Unfortunately they are the wrong symbols - the reason being that the
language of the page is English, so the quotemarks MUST match the usual
style of quotes used in that language. Neither British nor American
English uses the opening lower-9 quotemark. This is a central European
typographic tradition (obviously consistent with the Polish? nationality
of your coders/contributors), but is intrinsically wrong when the text
is written in English. If the page was in Polish, then it would be fine.

There are plenty of confirmatory resurces on the web if you search. This
is a good start: http://www.witch.westfalen.de/csstest/quotes/quotes.html

I'd also suggest strongly that you look to see whether those quotemarks
can be parsed and converted to <q> HTML tags rather than being hard
coded as (unfortunately incorrect) symbols. That way it is easier to
translate the document and retain the correct semantic quotes for the
language, by specifying the way the tags (and therefore the quotes) are
rendered for each language explicitly using CSS. (You will though need
to define the page language in your HTML, which currently you do not.)
It's also much "purer" and therefore arguably better HTML, and the <q>
tag IS correctly supported now in all modern browsers. This would
require some simple pre-processing of the blog text you receive from
contributors before posting, which I am sure cannot be beyond such
capable coders as yourselves - or even manual editing, since the posts
do not appear to be very frequent at present. ;)

But fundamentally, it's also a matter of reminding your writers that
whatever the correct quotemark symbols are for THEIR native language,
when writing in English only upper quotes are correct. Whoever's
responsibility you decide it is to fix this error, it will make your
documentation look more professional, since you have decided to publish
in English, to use correct English grammar also.

After finding it serendipitously, I am most impressed with your project,
and especially with Joanna Rutkowska's prescient September 2013 blog
commentary on security with Intel now introducing SGX in Skylake chips
and in all future x86 architecture. Her fears of this as a hiding place
for malware and an obvious vector for NSA snooping with or without the
collusion of Intel chime exactly with my own worries. It makes projects
like yours all the more critical, as long as we can cope with not
upgrading our processors beyond Haswell/Haswell-E. :(

Best regards,
Ian Berridge
