I think that's just personal preference, you can change this in System Settings (Power Management entry).

Qubes shouldn't go into sleep mode when closing the lid if it's connected to external monitor(s). Nothing should happen.
Now I have to press on the power button and login again after closed the laptop's lid. It's annoying.
