It seems that running:
xsetroot -solid white
in the VM solves the problem. Perhaps we should consider running this as part of VM startup scripts?

E.g. when using a 3G modem, the nm-applet icons gets quickly quite ugly and unreadable. This seems to be caused by incorrect background color being choosen (on the VM side), specifically black instead of white.
Nothing super urgent, but if that's an easy fix, it would be very welcomed :)
