I'm getting this, after I chose the VMs to backup, and the directory where to backup:

TypeError: coercing to Unicode: need string or buffer, NoneType foundat line 18 of file genericpath.py.

Additionally, there is a dummy text in the window where actions to be performed are displayed.

I can't reproduce this error...
Can you provide more specifics?

Ok, in 1.2.3 the above errors do not occur, however after the backup is nearly completed, I get an error:

"Error while copying file /home/joanna to /mnt/backup/qubes...../dom0-home.

Core 1.7.16, manager 1.2.3. /mnt/backup has ext4 device mounted.
