After the upgrade from R1->R2, according to the instructions in the wiki:

https://wiki.qubes-os.org/trac/wiki/UpgradeToR2

... my X won't start.

I can start X using startx from a text console -- it starts fine, but complains about inability to load shmoverride:

hostname: Name or service not known
xauth: creating new authority file /home/joanna/.serverauth.4463

ERROR: ld.so: object 'shmoverride.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.

X.Org X Server 1.12.2
Release Date: 2012-05-29
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: qubes 3.2.30-2.pvops.qubes.x86_64
Current Operating System: Linux dom0 3.2.30-5.pvops.qubes.x86_64 #1 SMP Mon Nov 26 13:35:43 EST 2012 x86_64

However, if I do sudo bash first, then startx starts X fine, and I can open my AppVMs and use them (e.g. to create this ticket ;).

So, I think there are two issues here:

  1. That X is not started by the init.d scripts (if that was only the shmoverride problem the X should start fine, only AppVMs windows would not work)
  2. That manual X starting (via starts) works only from root and not from user.

Similar to #686 - you haven't upgraded all the packages - kde-settings-kdm this time. It is also missing in r2/current yum repo...
