As currently most of the Xen stuff has been up-streamed to the vanilla kernels (starting with 2.6.37), it makes sense to switch to using the latest pvops kernels. This will probably require upgrading Xen to 4.1...?

Apparently he 2.6.38/39 pvops kernels are still not usable. Let's postpone it until some late time, and then check back again.

We really want to move on to a newer kernel than we have already, so e.g. 2.6.32.x pvops is not an option.

Some features we want from newer kernels:

  • better suspend/resume support
  • better GPU suppoort, e.g. so they work well with iommu enabled
  • more drivers for 3G modems

So, it seems like the current config we have:

  • 2.6.38.3-xenlinux for Dom0
  • 3.0.4 (plus optionally 2.6.38.3) for VMs

works pretty well.

We don't want to switch to pvops kernel in Dom0, because the pvop still doesn't have good S3 support.

Of course, sooner or later, we will upgrade to pvops also in Dom0. But this would likely be in post 1.0 release.
