Christophe BAL, by email, suggests:

I have two suggestions about the default formatting.

Important. The standard for references is to give just the number. I really think that it would be better to use the following definition :

\newcommand\thecstepcnt{\arabic{cstepcnt}}

Less important. Using a single color should be better.

This is to have a more "serious" look by default, see issue #1 on
GitHub. An option will allow to revert back to the legacy (one week
ago!) behavior.
Also, added a "none" pseudo color that is not issuing any color-changing
command.
