From Kevin Branch:

Note that archives.json actually receives records for both rule-matching events and non-rule-matching events, which I believe makes the alerts.json file redundant. Every record written to alerts.json is also written in exactly the same way to archives.json. I would not be surprised if Security Onion eventually completely stops looking at the alerts file on account of this.

Current plan of attack is as follows.

In /etc/syslog-ng/syslog-ng.conf, change this:

source s_ossec { file("/var/ossec/logs/alerts/alerts.json" program_override("ossec") follow_freq(1) flags(no-parse)); };
source s_ossec_archive { file("/var/ossec/logs/archives/archives.json" program_override("ossec_archive") follow_freq(1) flags(no-parse)); };

to this:

source s_ossec { file("/var/ossec/logs/archives/archives.json" program_override("ossec") follow_freq(1) flags(no-parse)); };

and remove this:

        source(s_ossec_archive);

Then update 6500_ossec.conf to add the alert tag only if the alert_level field exists.
