    // thumbnails dir URL. Set it if store thumbnails outside root directory
    'tmbURL'          => '',

How would I set above tmbURL if my files folder is for security reasons outside of the apache document root?

If you would like to see thumbnails than you have to put them somewhere on a webdomain, like thumbs.mydomain.com/elfinder/thumbs/

But that would always make the thumbsnails accessible by public, that goes against the idea of having private data. As I see it the thumbnails would need to be hashed and queried for through the connector.php as well as the other images or files.

Hm, what you are asking was implemented in 1.x version and option called fileURL, try to not set URL option in connector.

In 1.x it lead that all file transfers (even thumbs) were made through connector.

I see in elFinderVolumeDriver.class.php the 'URL' option as you say.
In my connector.php I set: 'URL' => '', ...
However I see my script requests do this:
http://trunk.debian6.local/15ece56560dfea9c7020526b60d8d79e.png

Now would I still need to have a htaccess/mod rewrite to redirect these requests to the right path aka point to connector.php?

Sorry I give you wrong info that in 1.x it is possible.

If your thumbs are not available to public than you need to set tmbURL to some script which will serve thumbnail like my-thumbs.php?hash= or use a rewrite like you suggest to your script.

I would like to see the feature of hiding the thumbs for the public in the 2.0 release version. I really need this feature too. @wolfgangihloff did you come up with a solution for this? I could need it as a temporarily fix.

Not for 2.0 release for sure. As I said write own script which will serve thumbs thought PHP, that should be just 10-20 lines of code.

@jmar, the thumbnail feature was not important for us so far, so we just disabled it
