Natural hazards engineering at regional scales · UCLA Civil and Environmental Engineering
We study how earthquakes, hurricanes, and wildfires affect the built environment across entire regions — from characterizing the hazard, to building inventories of what stands in its path, to simulating damage and turning those estimates into decisions about risk.

Our code lives in specialized organizations by topic:
- TRG-NHM — natural hazards modeling: the Hercules earthquake simulator, its toolbox and documentation, and DRM/PML implementations for Abaqus
- TRG-SHM — structural health monitoring: transfer learning for damage detection
- TRG-AI4Good — applied AI: FUELVISION wildfire fuel mapping, post-disaster assessment, and data de-identification tools
We also contribute to BRAILS within the NHERI SimCenter.
- Hercules — octree-based finite element earthquake simulator for large-scale wave propagation
- FUELVISION — multimodal data fusion and model ensembling for wildfire fuels mapping
- DRM and PML for Abaqus — domain reduction method and perfectly matched layers for soil-structure interaction
