An example application implementing an disaster response kit that allows an organizer to instantly communicate with volunteers. This application is built with Ruby on Rails.

This application should give you a ready-made starting point for writing your own application. Before we begin, we need to collect all the config values we need to run the application:
Config Value | Description |

TWILIO_ACCOUNT_SID | Your primary Twilio account identifier - find this in the Console. |
TWILIO_AUTH_TOKEN | Used to authenticate - just like the above, you'll find this here. |
TWILIO_NUMBER | A Twilio phone number in E.164 format - you can get one here |

First clone this repository and
cd
into itgit clone https://github.com/TwilioDevEd/conference-broadcast-rails.git cd conference-broadcast-rails

Install the dependencies
make install

Copy the sample configuration file and edit it to match your configuration
cp .env.example .env
See Twilio Account Settings to locate the necessary environment variables.

Setup server
make serve-setup

Run the server, the following command will run the application on port 3000.
make serve

Expose your application to the wider internet using ngrok. This step is important because the application won't work as expected if you run it through localhost. You can read this blog post for more details on how to use ngrok.
ngrok http 3000

Once ngrok is running, open up your browser and go to your ngrok URL. It will look something like this:

Configure Twilio to call your webhooks You will also need to configure Twilio to call your application when calls are received.
You will need to provision at least one Twilio number with voice capabilities so the application's users can participate in conferences. You an buy a number right here. Once you have a number you need to configure your number to work with your application. Open the number management page and open a number's configuration by clicking on it.
Remember that the number where you change the voice webhooks must be the same one you set on the TWILIO_NUMBER environment variable.

Navigate to your

That's it!
If you have Docker already installed on your machine, you can use our docker-compose.yml
to setup your project.
- Make sure you have the project cloned.
- Setup the
.env
file as outlined in the Local Development steps. - Run
docker-compose up
. - Follow the steps in Local Development on how to expose your port to Twilio using a tool like ngrok and configure the remaining parts of your application.
You can run the tests locally by typing:
bundle exec rails test
Additionally to trying out this application locally, you can deploy it to a variety of host services. Here is a small selection of them.
