This wiki is a working area for the Segment 3 TWG Technology group, which is focused on Open Source.

Background: The Smart Columbus OS should comprise reproducible solutions that may be transferred to and adopted by other cities facing similar challenges. The USDOT stated a strong preference that the OS team acquire, develop, and deliver code that is open source and available for license-free use and enhancement by third parties.

General Segment Deliverables: Develop, document and present our working group's recommendations on open source policies, licenses, protocols, and target operating models for the use of Open Source in the context of the Smart Columbus Operating System.

Our specific deliverables are

  1. Recommendation on open source licenses to suit the target state of SCOS
  2. List or risks and downsides related to Open Source. with potential ways to mitigate those risks
  3. Identify model organizations that do open source well
  4. Identify a process for code commit, core team membership, release pipeline
  5. Recommendation on how to engage and manage the community
  6. Suggestions for how to grow the community of contributors
