Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: Riddle Joker
  • Steam AppID of the game: 1277930

System Information

I confirm:

  • that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

Opening/movies do not play. Attempted with Proton 5.0-10 with WMP9 or WMP11 installed, a fix shown to be working for some users here and in other games running on the same engine to no avail. Also tried Proton-6.1-GE-1 and Proton-5.21-GE-1 which has media foundation, no difference. Attempting to launch with Proton Experimental, there are no color bars even displayed upon launch (which is when the opening should play), meaning the video file is completely skipped and not even played.

I have also tried a combination of other fixes including the ones already mentioned, such as protontricks quartz, directshow, devenum, installing LAV filters without any configuration, ffdshow etc. In addition, I have also tried changing the movie rendering mode in advanced settings (at the top bar, can be opened with ALT) to Auto, Media Foundation, Layer etc, all of which has not worked, even with the GE fork and movie rendering mode set to Media Foundation. Moreover, I have tried setting the WINE compatibility mode to Windows XP and manually adding and disabling winegstreamer in winecfg, which has yielded no results either.

This seems to occur with all visual novels running on the KiriKiri engine, such issues are not faced when e.g. playing a visual novel in Unity (such as Aokana) using the GE fork with media foundation together with taskset -c 0-15 %command% as launch arguments as this is necessary for Threadripper CPUs for media foundation.

Might be worth mentioning as well, but for KiriKiri engine games, using PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% in launch arguments is necessary for them to work. Attempting to launch the game without that argument will show a Direct3D error and a black screen, followed by the game rebooting itself after closing the error. You can get the screen to show if you open the top bar once (pressing ALT), but the issue of movies not playing still remains.

Reproduction

Launch the game, you will instantly be redirected to the menu after the first few screens, and no opening/movie will play.

Using protontricks 1277930 wmp11 on Proton 5.0-10 works fine to get videos to work for this particular KiriKiri engine game. The reason it was not playing for me was because I misremembered and expected the opening video to play at the start of the game, when it only plays at the end of the first chapter.

As such, I'm marking this as resolved since all is working.
