I have had this problem with the fglrx driver for a while. Not sure why it isn't fixed. I have installed Debian, upgraded to jessie/sid and installed the fglrx-driver. This is the output when I try to launch Steam:

You should report this to AMD.

johnny99, your crash is #3215 and is not an AMD driver problem.

Today I installed the newest SteamOS DVD on my computer. I was prepared for breakage, but it hit hard anyway. Thanks to this crash here (the fglrx driver installed automatically) I had to wrestle with lightdm that looped in effort to start and steam that refused to install. The second I used update-alternatives to switch to mesa, the installer rendered with swrast and now is in middle of download.

EDIT

I am not sure what I said about swrast is true anymore. However, it is a fact that the Steam installed correctly. Now I switched back to fglrx and surprise! It still works!

This is fixed in the latest AMD driver (14.04) http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Linux+x86. This is currently shipping in Debian jessie and we just pushed it out for SteamOS alchemist as well.
