I agree with you, I wouldn't want a death to NPCs to count towards completion either. I thought that a good solution would be to make him respawn if killed by NPCs (or keep him respawning until he finally counts as dead in the objectives). Otherwise the player can only sit there and watch the timer without being able to progress anymore.
