Clarify whether funding attribution is public #448

Users may not expect that their funding contributions will be publicly attributed to them by default.

The only indication of this, during the contribution workflow, is the presence of the
"Contribute without attribution" small text below the donation amount, which is not selected by default, and the hint text which currently says:

Your contribution will not be linked to your account. ZF Grants cannot refund non-attributed contributions.

As a user, what I wanted, and expected when not clicking that checkbox, is that the contribution will be privately associated with my account, to facilitate refunds, in a way that's visible only to the Zcash Foundation. While I do want to be refunded if the project never starts, I am not interested in my donations becoming publicly visible.

You should get users' explicit confirmation before publicly revealing their financial transactions (in this case, a donation). They may want to protect their privacy, or they may want to go public to signal their approval of the project or generosity or whatever. It's their call, and it should not be penalized by loss of refunds if the project doesn't get funded.

Disturbingly, the grant system's Privacy Policy (or at least a quick skimming thereof) does not resolve the ambiguity.

Hey @tromer,

Thanks for starting a conversation around this.

This is definitely one of the more sensitive areas of the grant system. I'll loop in the Foundation so we can think about this a bit more and determine next steps.

Thanks for your attention on the grant system! Please let me know if you have any other thoughts here.

We struggled with the language around this. I definitely want users to understand what they've revealing. Eran, is there different terminology that would have been more immediately clear?

I would use two separate radio buttons:

  • Make my contribution public
  • Only the Zcash Foundation will know who made this contribution

If the funding goal is not reached:

  • Refund my contribution
  • Donate my contribution to the Zcash Foundation

Chatted with @dternyak and we think we came up with a good solution here:

  • The first set of radio buttons as you suggest @tromer, with a default private attribution for every grant
  • Private grants from logged-in user will still respect the global refund settings (if a user has set a refund address)

We'll be working on this for the next release.
