Web Shortcut Tools

This application allow you to launch web/internet shortcuts created in Windows, Linux, and Apple. Specifically, these are files with the following extensions: .url, .website, .desktop, .webloc. This application is part of the Web Shortcut Utility Suite.

This application requires that Java Runtime Environment 1.6 or later be installed (I realize that this may be an inconvenience).

Note that the installers are still considered alpha quality. Please let me know of any issues you have (or if you are able to use them successfully).

Windows

To install on Windows, you can use the latest Windows installer:

This installer has been tested with the following operating systems:

  • Windows 8.1

And with the following Java versions:

  • Oracle Java 7
  • Oracle Java 8

Linux

To install on Linux, you can use the latest Debian package:

The package targets the Gnome desktop environment. It appears to mostly work in a KDE environment as well.

This package has been tested with the following operating systems (more extensive testing in non-Ubuntu distributions is required - I would not be surprised if there are environments in which it will not work):

  • Ubuntu 12.04
  • Ubuntu 14.04
  • KUbuntu 14.04 (see known issues)

And with the following Java versions:

  • OpenJDK 7

Apple/Mac/OSX

There is no installer for Apple PCs. However, you can use the JAR file directly (see below)

JAR File

The installers essentially just install a JAR file which performs the launching. Note that the JAR file uses system-specific commands to start a web browser, and therefore will not work on all operating systems. It should work on the following operating systems (although it has not been exhaustively tested):

  • Windows XP and later
  • Linux environments which have the "xdg-open" command.
  • Mac OSX (I am not sure the exact versions which are supported).
  • Solaris is NOT supported.

The JAR file is run using the following syntax:

  • java -jar WebShortcutLaunch.jar "filename"

The latest JAR file can be found here:

Known issues

  • The launcher does not appear to work on Windows with files with unicode characters (it gives a "file not found" error).
  • The following issues have been seen on KUbuntu. I am not sure if these apply to all KDE environments?
    • Requires restart before file associations take complete effect.
    • The "Web Shortcut Tools" icon does not appear on .url, .website, and .webloc files.
    • A "Web Shortcut Launcher" window appears in the task bar, and stays for a long time after the web browser opens (eventually, it disappears). It does not appear to cause any issues, though.
