The DNS extension exposes cached from String -> Option[Resolved]. This allows DNS resolutions to avoid an ask to get to the cache. The Resolved type is the old protocol that is not Srv aware.

The newer DnsProtocol added to support SRV records doesn't have a mechanism to get directly to cache meaning that the ask to the manager can become the bottleneck.

Options:

  • Expand Dns to include the new protocol. However Dns was publically pluggable so this will break other implementations outside of Akka.
  • Create a new DNS extension for the new protocol DnsV2?
  • Use a private API for async-dns that has access to the cache. However this won't be used if users use async-dns as the default resolver which for many cases means it won't scale
