Cabel met his business partner, Steven Frank, through the Amiga community when they were high school students. After heading off to college and getting “terrible” jobs, they decided to start a Mac software company on the side during “the worst time in Apple’s history” (the Gil Amelio era).  Last week, [Twitter](http://twitter.com), the thing I work on, had some security issues. Earlier in the week a phishing attack started going around. Then, someone used a [dictionary attack](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dictionary_attack) to grab the account of one of our support staff, who has administrative privileges on the site. We cleaned up both of these issues just as fast as we could. The company communicated quickly and openly about what happened, and if anything, the press seemed to encourage more people to check Twitter out. It was a stressful week, but it forced some positive changes.

 Every couple years I get the urge to peek out of my Apple-furnished hole and survey the landscape of alternative devices and operating systems. I call this urge [switching season](http://al3x.net/2009/08/10/switching-season.html), and I give into it despite having [laid out my own rules for computing happiness](http://al3x.net/2008/09/08/al3xs-rules-for-computing-happiness.html) years ago. It took place in a close-in neighborhood on Portland’s east side – the Portland of _Portlandia_, the weird and genuine counterpart to the city’s moneyed and buttoned-down west side. XOXO happened around a high school that’s been converted into offices. A local grocery store chain (think a less-precious Whole Foods) is headquartered there. A startup I’m investing in rents space there too. My house is a ten minute walk away.
