Lots of services send letters to users with a unique code, which the user then enters to identify themself.

There could also be a very similar pattern called something like "Allowing a user to share data about themself" which would also use a code.


This is a very similar thing that is done differently across government, for example, the vehicle tax service uses a 16 digit number:


Whereas other services use smaller amounts of digits. One of the things I think this pattern should do is recommend an amount of digits, amongst other things that would be important to consider – Such as display the code clearly on the page.

There's a bit of work that's needed here to look at some different ways this is done and find the best way.
