With R2014b, it does not seem to be possible to reduce the thickness of axis borders or gridlines. Not yet verified when using annotations.

Produce a minimal working example. Check if the issue arises with print(). If so, report a bug to TheMathWorks.

This comment was posted on the FEX export_fig page in October 2014:
"I encountered a similar issue as described by Emma. However, it works fine for linewidths>0.75 pt, but for smaller linewidths the lines seem to be set to 0.75 pt when exporting, i.e. when exporting lines of 0.5 pt width (or any value<0.75), it will export them as 0.75 pt, when exporting lines with 1 pt width (or any value>0.75 pt) it exports them with the correct width."
I suspect this is a bug in print(), but I don't know if this has been confirmed or reported to The MathWorks.

This was indeed due to the same underlying internal Matlab bug in R2014b: LineWidths<0.75 used EPS's default line width, rather than computing the actual value. This affects regular plot lines as well as axes Ruler Axles and grid lines (that have LineWidth=0.5 by default).

This has now been fixed in print2eps.m (part of the export_fig package), which I have just committed.

I was just informed by MathWorks that the line-width issue was fixed by them in Matlab R2015b.
