I took the ideas from this post and some inspiration from a
[pull request](https://github.com/rootless-containers/slirp4netns/pull/35) to actually implement
this versioning in an existing project and wrote
[ansemjo/version.sh](https://github.com/ansemjo/version.sh). It is a bash script which uses the
format substitution explained above to output normalized version strings whether you are running it
in checked-out repository or from a downloaded tarball. This somewhat eases the need to reimplement
this idea in every language you use. Almost all languages should have a way to call subprocesses and
use their output somehow.
